Even gurus should go with social media: Marthapedia

Should a celebrity guru who makes a living doling out advice open up by getting into social media? You bet.

Martha Stewart, as has been reported, is launching a new website, called "Marthapedia," that will adopt a certain style of social media.

As the name implies, it will be Wikipedia-like, but only sort of; it won't be as free-wheeling as the democratic online encyclopedia. Sounds like the site will accept lifestyle submissions from Martha fans who have good ideas to share, but be selective about which ones are published (and keep out the riff-raff).

Who'd have thunk that traditional Martha Stewart, of all people, would lead the celebrity world into something as bleeding-edge as social media and user generated content? But her company's move makes perfect sense.

Martha Stewart is a brand with a very big base of enthusiasts, and the unavoidable trend is to get those enthusiasts talking with the brand and talking with each other. It's a smart complement to the traditional content that "Martha Inc." will continue to produce, and a way to expand revenue opportunities.

I think we'll see more celebrities and gurus opening up in the future, as they realize that there's opportunity not just in the lecture model, but in also creating conversations and selectively taking part in them.

(And BTW, the Enthusiast Group just happens to have a platform that can support social media strategies for you gurus and celebrities. Oprah, Deepak, we await your calls. :)
